Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that only affects a few thousand people every year. It involves cancer of the mesothelium, which is the lining that surrounds your lungs, heart, stomach, and other organs. There are certain factors that put people more at risk of developing mesothelioma. While these risk factors do increase your risk of mesothelioma, they are not thought to directly cause cancer. In addition, some people with many risk factors remain cancer-free their entire lives, while others with no known risk factors end up with rare forms of cancer.
Some of the risk factors for developing mesothelioma include:
Exposure to Asbestos
Asbestos is a name for various naturally occurring silicate materials. They are made up of long fibrous crystals that can easily be inhaled. Because of its heat resistance and strength, it was often used in industries like construction, mining, shipbuilding, the generation of electrical power, heavy industry, and firefighting. Around 70 to 80 percent of people who develop mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos. Individuals in industries where asbestos is used can breathe in or ingest asbestos fibers. In addition, people who are exposed to asbestos can bring the fibers home on their personal items or clothing, putting their families at risk.
People who are exposed to radiation, such as during cancer treatment, are at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma.
Alone, smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products does not increase a person’s risk of developing mesothelioma. In combination with asbestos exposure, however, smoking can increase the risk of developing cancer in the lungs.
Around one in one-hundred people are genetically predisposed to developing mesothelioma. This means that their risk of mesothelioma was inherited from one of their parents. This is typically the result of a change or mutation to a gene known as BAP1.
